Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that his country has not witnessed major changes that indicate the United States was preparing to withdraw its troops from Syria.

Speaking from Sochi during a summit that brought together the presidents of Turkey and Iran, he added that US President Donald Trump was attempting to fulfill his electoral pledges, but he is not always able to meet them due to “internal” political affairs.

The Sochi summit, he continued, tackled the impact of the US pullout from northeastern Syria will have on the rest of the country.

Putin revealed that the summit welcomed the withdrawal, hoping that it will mark a positive turning point that will help pave the way to stability.

Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also agreed to bolster cooperation within the framework of the Astana process on Syria.
