Vladimir Putin hasn’t given up his favorite tune: strum the strings of Donald Trump until he plays along. Now, the two are arranging yet another “peace summit” over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and it’s clear who’s tuning whom.
After a lukewarm Alaska summit held on Aug. 15, 2025, that yielded little more than rhetoric and empty promises, Trump and Putin are reportedly arranging a second face-to-face meeting in Hungary, possibly within weeks. This would follow Trump’s recent two-hour phone call with Putin, which he described as “productive.” (via BBC) But we all know what productive means for the two dictators.
While Trump tried to put on a mask of sadness for the media, calling the innocent people dying in war “ridiculous,” he quickly turned to his usual self, claiming, ” It doesn’t affect our country” since no Americans are being harmed. It proves how seldom he is concerned about ending the war in reality. Yet, his hunger for the Nobel Peace Prize continues to land him in these “meetings,” publicizing his fake attempts at negotiating a peace deal.
Trump had previously bragged about making progress in ending the war, while Putin claimed Russia had paved a path toward peace after the Alaskan summit. Yet, there was no cease-fire, no troop withdrawals, and zero guarantees to protect Ukrainian sovereignty. It was just promises wrapped in vague language while Ukrainian people continued to suffer. When Trump was asked by a reporter why he believes a second meeting will yield different results, his answer again lacked any responsibility:
“I think Alaska actually set a stage, and that wasn’t very long ago. You have to understand, I came into this situation. I didn’t start this war. This is a Biden deal. I came into it, and it was a mess. It could’ve led to World War 3.”
His dodging of the simple question gives away what the new meeting is all about. It isn’t a reset, but round two of the same game. Trump is simply granting Russia a platform to recast war as negotiation. Putin remains in the driver’s seat while Ukraine remains sidelined, and millions continue to suffer. These meetings aren’t about peace, but about control that Trump clearly lacks in his dynamic with Putin.
The MAGA boss simply takes the bait every time to frame himself as the peacemaker, while Ukraine continues to bleed. The new Hungary meeting, set to be hosted by the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, will simply be another photobooth for the three dictators. And thanks to Trump’s efforts, Putin will get another chance to reshape the war narrative without putting an end to the atrocities.
Users on X were quick to point out how it’s all just a sham, arguing, sarcastically commenting, ” So there will be two dictators and one who is trying to become one, meeting without the president of Ukraine. Sounds like a productive plan.” Another jabbed, “Trump keeps getting suckered into these meetings and all that comes out of them are empty promises. Putin is playing Trump like he’s a guitar in a thrift store.”
