Fans of Nancy Mitford's novel The Pursuit of Love were left highly unimpressed with the BBC's adaptation as the three-part drama series made its debut on TV this evening.
Viewers ended up "switching off" the drama this evening as they brutally branded it "drivel" and a "travesty".
The three-part drama adaptation of the novel follows two cousins living in 1920s Oxfordshire, with Linda Radlett, played by Lily James, dreaming of adventure while Fanny Logan (Emily Beecham) hopes for stability after she was abandoned by her mother.
Yet fans took to Twitter to declare that they were reaching for the remotes to change the channel.
One commented: "#ThePursuitOfLove I switched it off after twenty minutes."
While another wrote: "I've tried to watch it, it's just odd. Turned it off and it's staying off. #ThePursuitOfLove."
A third fumed: "#ThePursuitOfLove no no and no. I am off to read the book. This is drivel."
"Sorry, it's a travesty, turned it off and re-reading my battered Penguin original instead #ThePursuitOfLove," another fumed.
One announced: "Couldn’t care less about any of the characters in #ThePursuitOfLove so after 30 minutes it’s a no from me...I’m off!"
A fan fumed: "Enjoyed the book but this tv production is dire. Switching off #ThePursuitOfLove."
Viewers were also left cringing after realising that Dominic West plays Lily James' dad in the adaptation.
The drama, directed by Emily Mortimer, caused a stir before it finished filming when James was photographed cuddling married co-star Dominic West on a scooter in Rome in October.
One tweeted: "So Dominic West is playing Lily James' father in #ThePursuitOfLove."
While another commented: "I hadn’t realised that Dominic West played Lily James father."
A third joked: "Dominic and Lily play father and daughter in this? Good lord that’s kinky. #ThePursuitOfLove."
