A Met Police statement said: “Police were called at approximately 9.10pm on Thursday, 11 July to reports of a male stabbed on Brighton Road in Croydon.

“Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

"Despite their efforts, a male, believed to be aged in his late teens, died at the scene at 9.50pm.

“A second male, also believed to be aged in his late teens, was found nearby suffering from stab injuries.

"He was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a stable condition; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“A third male, thought to be in his late teens, was found close to Purley Railway Station suffering from a slash wound.

"He was taken to a south London hospital for treatment; his injuries are not life-threatening. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder."

The Met confirmed that two other males were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

A witness told MyLondon: "The whole road [has been] closed with about 10 police cars.

"There was a stabbing on the High Street and then a stabbing at the station.

"We were told they were both linked. We had to leave Pizza Express out of the back door."

Writing on the My South London Facebook page, Daniel Scott-Drysdale said: "Just driven through there and the police/ambulances etc are all over the place, on the main road and down the alley behind the shops behind the Pear Tree etc. The main road is cordoned off."

Keith Eddowes added: "We live outside where it happened ... [a] blue tent is going up."

Jade Christelow wrote: "We live by the train station, I took the dog out and was shocked by the traffic! Continued walking and was told there was a stabbing at the station so I continued round the corner and all the High Street was shut off and I was told to turn around by an officer."
