'Pure' Rangers atmosphere extolled by Bayer Leverkusen boss as he makes u-turn on closed doors football

Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz has performed a dramatic u-turn on playing football behind closed doors - despite admitting the Ibrox atmosphere in his last match was “incredible”.

The Dutch boss was censured by the Bundesliga for comments he made before the first leg of the Europa League last 16 tie in Glasgow last month where he likened matches behind closed doors to Italian fourth division amateur games.

However, the Leverkusen manager - who led his side to a 3-1 first leg lead against Rangers - admits he has reluctantly changed his mind.

He said: "I have been thinking about that last game at Ibrox a lot. It was really good wasn't it?

"Although the match itself wasn't brilliant, the result was. And to play at a stadium like Ibrox was an incredible experience in front of 50,000 fanatical Rangers supporters.

"It was a pure football atmosphere.

"I said what I did at the time because I have a strong opinion and I still stick to it...football is for the fans.

"But I now realise that it's about money at this time. We’re only going to play ghost games because clubs need the money.

"Clubs could be in a lot of financial trouble if they don't play and they need the TV money. So I understand that now we have to play behind closed doors.

"I'm really happy we have returned to training for small groups.

"And I think the fans will be happy if they can watch live football on TV after six weeks of no football or repeats of games from decades ago.

"It's better than nothing."
