Puppy snatcher tries to break out of jail by switching places with brother during visit

A man in jail for snatching a puppy at knifepoint tried to escape by switching places with his brother during a family visit.

Elhaj Diarrassouba, 24, originally from London, handed his sibling his armband as he tried to slip away unnoticed by prison staff at HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire.

But "vigilant" prison staff rumbled the brother as he walked back to his cell.

Diarrassouba - who is serving a five-year term for wielding a knife as he snatched a £3,000 American bulldog - has now been moved to a maximum security lockup in Milton Keynes.

A prison source told the Sun : “At some stage, the brothers were able to swap an arm band used to identify inmates...

“At the end of the visit, the brother went to join other prisoners who were going back to their cells.

“A sharp-eyed officer spotted the difference in clothes and apprehended him."

A G4S spokesperson told The Mirror: “Vigilant staff immediately intervened and there was no security breach.”

Diarrassouba was jailed after he travelled with Joshua McCook to south Wales with the intention of buying a pricey pup with counterfeit £50 notes.

The court heard the victim of the robbery, Adam Moheiz, was a dog-breeder who advertised rare blue-type puppies for sale for £3,000 on Instagram.

A confrontation erupted in the car park where the canine hand-over was taking place when the forgeries were spotted.

Diarrassouba and McCook drew a knife on Mr Moheiz when he rumbled their scam.

Both were convicted of robbery and possession of bladed articles following a trial at Swansea Crown Court.
