Puppy needs emergency treatment after eating 'ketamine' while out on walk

A puppy needed emergency veterinary treatment after swallowing a packet of drugs believed to be ketamine while out on a walk in Nailsea.

Five month-old Golden Retriever pup Beau collapsed after swallowing one of the packets on a grassy area used by dog walkers at Hanham Way in the town on Saturday night.

The clear plastic packets, which had pictures of dolphins on the front and contained a white powder, were found alongside numerous nitrous oxide canisters.

The dog was rushed to the vets where the bill for treatment is expected to run into several hundred pounds.

The dog is ‘recovering well’ with the owner, who does not want to be named, confirming that the drug was a ‘sedative’ powder, possibly ketamine.

She told the community website Nailsea People said: “My five month old puppy collapsed after swallowing one of these packets.”

She is now warning all dog walkers to be vigilant.

Local people have raised concerns that the drugs could have also easily been picked up by a child.

Kayla Caddoo-Frost said: "The poor pup but it is not just animals.

“What about small children.”

Beau was treated at Watkins and Tasker vets in Nailsea.

A spokesman for the practice said: "We treated Beau as an emergency case on Saturday and thanks to the speed in which treatment was received Beau is doing well.

"We would strongly urge anyone with a pet who may have eaten or been into contact with something toxic to seek immediate veterinary advice as the quicker we can treat hopefully the greater chance a pet will survive. "

Police have said they will be stepping up patrols of the area following the incident.

People are also being urged if they see anything suspicious in the area to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
