Pupils win maths challenge

Pupils from West Calder High School achieved the top prize at a national mathematics competition.

As part of Maths Week Scotland, a team of 30 pupils from S3 participated in a nationwide challenge called Maths Wi Nae Borders which involves thousands of pupils working in teams to solve mathematical problems.

The competition saw the West Calder pupils completing five difficult maths problems, presenting their answers using a variety of media including Tik Tok and videos as well as written solutions, as they came out on top to claim the title for 2021.

The judging panel announced the result saying: “Their entry was full of joy, there was a real sense of teamwork, and the mathematics was rock solid.”

Dr Claire McKinley, maths teacher at West Calder High School said: “At West Calder High School we are incredibly proud of this young group of mathematicians. “Their determination, enthusiasm and resilience for problem solving shines through daily.

“They should be proud of their achievements and hopefully their success will continue throughout their studies.”
