Pupils were evacuated from school after discovery of 'suspected Second World War device'

A school was evacuated and a 100-metre police cordon put up over a report of a "World War II device".

The item was found on the grounds of the Rushcliffe School.

Police called to the scene on Friday morning July 16, said "the object posed no threat".

Sergeant Paul Whitehead, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “An evacuation has been stood down after an object was confirmed not to be a World War II device as initially suspected.

“Police were called to Rushcliffe School shortly after 11am this morning after the item was discovered.

“As a precaution, a 100-metre cordon was established while Joint Services Explosive Ordinance Disposal Engineers investigated and it was quickly established that the object posed no threat.

“We thank the public for their cooperation during this time.”
