Pupils swap East Kilbride for the streets of New York in trip of a lifetime

The Big Apple beckoned for East Kilbride pupils when they travelled Stateside for the trip of a lifetime.

A group of youngsters from fourth to sixth year and five teachers from St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School explored the sights and sounds of New York in what has become a popular annual trip for all involved.

Broadway, Central Park and Times Square were just some of the stop-off points during the five-day trip.

The first day saw them tantalise their taste buds at Hard Rock Cafe before heading to Broadway.

Some of the more energetic in the party went for a morning run in Central Park on the second day.

Then there was a hop-on hop-off bus around New York City visiting various attractions such as the 9/11 Memorial and the Brooklyn Bridge and there was also some free time for shopping.

Also on the itinerary was Top of the Rock, St Patrick’s Cathedral and, of course, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

Sports fans got a real treat when they headed to Yankee Stadium via train and subway for an evening fixture.

This was followed by dinner at Yankee Stadium.

A night on Broadway was also on the cards when they saw the Mean Girls show.

And the final day saw them head to Trump Tower and Grand Central Station before a final meal at Planet Hollywood.

PE teacher Scott McGregor told the East Kilbride News: “It was an amazing experience. Everyone had a fantastic time.

“This year we were unlucky with the weather. Although it was warm, it also rained a few times.

“We were staying within a 10 minute walk of Times Square which is obviously a great location.

“Highlights included the morning run in Central Park, Yankee games, Broadway show and the Empire State Building.

“We would also like to say a big thanks to Claire and her team at the Sainsbury’s store, Kingsgate.

“They very kindly allowed us to bag-pack in their store in December which helped pay for the hoodies and T-shirts.

“The trip was led by myself and Michelle McPolin, also a PE teacher. Other staff who came were Linzie McQueen, PE, and Alan Shaw and Peter Johnston from the art department.”
