Pupils need a “national education recovery plan” to stop them falling behind as classes remain shut, school leaders have warned.

Geoff Barton, head of the Association of School & College Leaders, accused PM Boris Johnson of only having “vague plans” to help ­children catch up this summer.

The ex-headteacher backed a scheme to give laptops to disadvantaged Year 10 children but argued it must be extended to others quickly.

He said: “We need a national mission and we need it now.”

Amanda Spielman, chief of school standards department Ofsted, also called for clearer Government leadership so councils, schools and unions could put measures in place.

And she warned some children risked domestic violence and dropping out of education completely.

She said the longer schools are closed, “the more space there is for bad things to happen to children”.
