Pupils may not return to blaze-hit Dunfermline high school for a year

A blaze-hit school could stay shut for a year.

Woodmill High in Dunfermline was gutted in the fire on Sunday.

Councillors have been told the school may not re-open until next August.

In the meantime, officials are trying to make arrangements for the 1400 pupils to be taught elsewhere.

A 14-year-old boy from Kirkcaldy was charged with wilful fireraising to danger of life following the blaze.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Tuesday. He was released on bail.

In the short term, Woodmill pupils are likely to be taught at other secondary schools in Fife. It is hoped each year group will be placed together.

The blaze affected every part of the school.

Headteacher Sandy McIntosh said: “Work continues at the Woodmill building.

“There are parts of the building that we won’t be able to salvage and demolition contractors are taking control of the site.”
