Pupils 'locked in classrooms' over safety fears on last day of school

Pupils were reportedly locked in classrooms at a Merseyside secondary school over fears for their safety after flares were let off outside.

Police are patrolling the area around Deyes High School in Maghull this evening after they were called to reports of a disturbance involving youths outside the school at around 3pm.

Parents said their children were stopped from leaving school this afternoon due to safety concerns after flares were let off outside the building.

The ECHO understands today is the last day of school for Year 11 pupils who finished their GCSEs on Thursday.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said they were called to a report that youths were causing a disturbance outside the school on Deyes Lane at around 3pm today, May 28.

No injuries were reported.

One parent who saw the drama unfold after she went to pick up her daughter this afternoon, said pupils were "singing and cheering" as they signed shirts and let off flares outside.

Another parent said: "My 12 year old son is locked in his classroom."
