Pupils kept indoors as high school put on 'lockdown' after reports of males 'carrying weapons' nearby

Pupils were kept indoors on Thursday afternoon (September 8) after a high school was put on 'lockdown' following reports of two males carrying weapons nearby. The incident, which did not happen at the school but in closeby, caused The Westleigh School to be put on lockdown.

A large police presence was also reported. Police said they received reports of two males carrying weapons in the area, but later deemed the area to be safe and made no arrests.

The school, on Westleigh Lane, Leigh, made the announcement on social media on Thursday afternoon, confirming that pupils and staff were put on lockdown at around 2pm. Within five minutes, they added that police said it was safe to lift the lockdown.

On social media, the school wrote: "Parents/Carers, your children may share that we have locked down for a short period, this afternoon. We were notified to lockdown by the police, following an incident in the local community, not in school.

"Within five minutes, the Police advised us that the area was safe and gave permission to lift the lockdown. During this time, our children behaved impeccably and we are very proud of them. Well done Westleigh!"

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 1:50pm this afternoon (Thursday 8 September 2022), officers responded to reports of two males suspected to be carry weapons on Sovereign Fold Road in Leigh.

"Specialist officers attended the scene and carried out extensive enquiries and have deemed the area safe. No arrests have been made at this time.”
