Pupils kept in classrooms amid distressing scenes as staff member airlifted to hospital

A school has been forced to close after pupils were told to stay in classrooms while a member of staff was airlifted to hospital.

A number of ambulance vehicles attended and the male staff member was taken to hospital in an air ambulance.

The dramatic scenes happened at The Deanery High School, on Frog Lane in Wigan.

Paramedics were called to the school just after 8.50am on Monday following reports of a man feeling unwell.

Students were kept in classrooms to avoid witnessing the distressing scenes - reports the Manchester Evening News .

The school posted a message on Facebook confirming to parents the school would be shut for the rest of the day.

It read: "A member of staff has been taken very ill. So as not to cause distress to pupils they have been in their classrooms whilst the air ambulance and emergency services have been on site.

"Many staff have supported in the incident. Unfortunately we will have to close school as most staff have been affected. If any pupils needs to stay, supervision will be on hand.

"If any pupils need support, the clergy are on hand. We hope to be open as usual tomorrow."

It adds: "Please keep the member of staff and his family in your thoughts and prayers. If you do not want your child to be dismissed from school, then please contact school immediately."

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.51am to the school. We have taken a patient to hospital by air ambulance.

"We sent a number of resources - two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and the air ambulance attended."
