Pupils in tears outside school for teacher killed in terror attack as tributes mount

Pupils were in tears today outside the school where James Furlong taught.

The teacher, originally from Liverpool, was Head of History, Government and Politics at The Holt School in Wokingham.

He died on Saturday after being stabbed in a park in Reading during a terrorist attack.

His friend, American citizen Joe Ritchie-Bennett, also died in the attack, while the identity of the third victim has not yet been released to the public.

Suspect Khairi Saadallah continues to be questioned by police after they arrested him under the Terrorism Act.

Today pupils gathered at the school to lay flowers and pay tribute to their teacher.

There were rows and rows of flowers placed by the school gates, with pupils and their parents visibly moved by the scenes.

A red and white Liverpool scarf was also placed among on the school gates , in a nod to James Furlong's roots.

Banners describing the teacher as a "hero" were placed on the school gates.

One read: "'And remember, be safe, be careful, don't do anything I wouldn't do' your words Mr Furlong, we'll miss you, taken too soon, our hero, fly high."

Staff and pupils at the Holt School also said Mr Furlong, 36, was a "wonderful" teacher who was deeply supportive of pupils and passionate about the subjects he taught them.

More than 100 pupils attended The Holt School on Monday morning to hold a moment of silence, with flowers laid at the school gates.

Former student Charis Waller, 18, remembered Mr Furlong as having a "lovely manner".

She told PA: "I was never personally taught by him but he always had a lovely, lovely manner.

"Always happy. You could just tell from a mile off he was lovely. It's just so tragic."

Lessons at the school were cancelled on Monday as many pupils and staff gathered to lay flowers.

Others lit candles in Mr Furlong's memory at the nearby St Paul's Parish Church.

Mr Furlong also taught at King David High School in Liverpool for four years, before moving on.

In a statement shared with the ECHO today, headteacher Michael Sutton said Mr Furlong was a popular and kind member of staff who pupils remembered as being dedicated to their wellbeing both inside and outside the classroom.

Mr Sutton said: "The King David High School Community was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of former teacher James Furlong over the weekend. He worked at the school over a period of 4 years before leaving, for a post in Reading, in 2012.

"James is well remembered by many staff as lovely, gentle man who cared for his pupils and colleagues. They all appreciated his dedication and commitment to their wellbeing, which extended beyond the classroom, as he took an active part in school trips and events.

"He was deeply respected and liked by teachers and pupils. Our thoughts are very much with his family at this terrible time. We will remember him and his family in our prayers."
