Pupils have great first week at new Calderwood Primary School

Pupils at the brand new Calderwood Primary School have enjoyed a fantastic first week.

The £14.3 million state-of-the art school at East Calder welcomed primary pupils from last Wednesday, with the school’s oldest and youngest children joining headteacher Miss Burton to cut the ribbon.

The children and champions were piped into the school along a red carpet to enter the superb new facilities for the very first time.

All the children were given a special Calderwood Pioneer medal to mark the first day, made by Skye Folk and funded by Calderwood residents and local businesses.

They also enjoyed a special Calderwood Cake made by Miss Redmond.

Other activities for the first days of school included the Great Calderwood Scavenger Hunt to help the children get to know their new environment, and a Neon Party with a Silent Disco.

Headteacher Sarah Burton said: “Our vision at Calderwood Primary is to go beyond the dream and we have certainly done that in our first few days, all together in our amazing new school.

“There has been a real buzz of excitement with our children, staff and whole school community.

“The parents/carers, local businesses and the whole Calderwood Community have given us incredible support, by donating goods and services and volunteering to support all our activities.

“There are too many to name, but special thanks must go to Sher Carpets, Tesco East Calder, musicians Dale Miles, Trav Panesar and John Anderson, as well as photographers/videographers Cecilia Fisher, Josh Jeffrey, Joe Paterson and Paul Watt.”

There has already been some great feedback from parents and carers about the school.

One said: “We so appreciate the effort that you have all gone to, to make this week such a special experience. You really have pulled out all the stops to create memories which will be cherished forever.”

Another added: “The kids’ faces and energy when they came out of school on Friday was amazing. Thank you for all you have done to make this week special for them but also taking into account how they would be feeling starting a new school.”

Calderwood Primary was delivered on behalf of the council by development partner Hub South East with Morrison Construction as the primary contractor, the same team behind the successful delivery of the nearby award-winning West Calder High School.

It has been designed by jm architects with sustainability and suitability as core objectives.
