Big-hearted pupils from a West Lothian primary school have been helping to raise money for one of the parents who is battling cancer.
Longridge Primary School and Nursery Class have been helping Rachel Kennedy, whose sons attend the school.
Last year Rachel was diagnosed with cervical cancer after a 4cm tumour was found. The surrounding lymph nodes were also found to be cancerous.
This was devastating news. However, her oncology team advised that a treatment plan was to be put in place and they were treating to cure.
Rachel’s cancer was described as aggressive and unfortunately in February this year Rachel was told her tumour had grown and spread to both her lungs. Tragically this meant her treatment plan was no longer to cure, but to prolong her life.
A desperate fundraising drive was launched to help fund alternative treatment for Rachel after she was given the heartbreaking news that her life expectancy would be between 12 and 17 months.
Rachel has been blogging her journey while creating awareness of cervical cancer.
Theresa McLaren, head teacher, said: “The whole school and nursery participated, virtually, in the Summer Montane Spine Race and ran a massive 268 miles collectively from nursery to P7.
“All children were running to raise funds for Rachel’s Gofundme page, which has been set up to raise money for alternative treatments.
“At the same time as the children were running their miles in Longridge, Deborah Allum, another Longridge parent, took her biggest challenge to date and actually participated in the Summer Montane Spine Race.
“Deborah started her journey on June 19 in Edale and finished the race on June 24 at Kirk Yetholm.
“Deborah was also raising funds for Rachel and altogether the school and Deborah raised nearly £2000.”
