Monklands’ schools and nurseries are being invited to enter the sixth annual pocket garden competition run by Keep Scotland Beautiful.
Young people aged from three to 18 have the chance to design a miniature “colourful and sustainable” display reflecting four interlinked themes – the current year of coasts and waters, the One Planet Picnic, wildlife gardening and health and wellbeing through noticing nature.
Winning entries will feature either at the planned Scottish gardens show, due to take place at Scone Palace in late May if coronavirus restrictions allow the event to take place; or alternatively through an interactive online showcase.
Last year’s winners will also have their pocket garden designs displayed as part of the 2021 exhibition.

“Over the years, this competition has inspired entries from across the country and we hope that in 2021 it gives parents and educators a new focus as we continue a blended mix of home and in-school learning.”
Monklands enjoyed success in the first year of the pocket garden contest back in 2016, when green-fingered pupils at Petersburn Primary were chosen as the North Lanarkshire winners after impressing judges with their 3D pallet featuring native Scottish plants including fennel, honeysuckle, daisies and grass.
