Pupils defend head boy and girl at Perth Academy after speech

Fellow pupils have leapt to the defence of the head boy and girl at Perth Academy, after their speech at the recent leavers’ day left some parents furious.

In Friday’s PA, we reported that some parents were calling for the pair to publicly apologise for the speeches they made at the school’s leavers’ day last week.

During the speech, the parents say the pair were “naming and shaming” their fellow classmates, with one parent even saying she doesn’t know if she wants to continue sending her younger children to the school.

The parents the PA spoke to said they were “shocked” and “disgusted” by the content of the speeches, and say they want the pair stripped of their awards to services to the school, to be presented at this week’s prizegiving ceremony.

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council also apologised on behalf of the school, and confirmed the school had received a complaint about the speeches.

However, since the article was published on the PA’s social media channels, a number of people have come out defending the pair for their speech.

One reader said: “In my opinion it was all just banter. We are stifling our kids by telling them they can’t say this or you can’t say that cause ye (sic) might offend somebody.

“It was all just fun and it has been taken out of context.

“And I don’t see any pupils complaining, just their parents who are complaining for teenagers that are 17-18.”

Another said: “This was intended as a joke, those involved were consulted and agreed to the jokes.

“At most they are guilty of a little nativity (sic) but they’re teenagers for God’s sake.

“It was absolutely not bullying.

“These guys are all best friends and have been a fantastic SPLT [senior pupil leadership team].

“To request they are stripped of their awards is ridiculous.

“I wonder how perfect the stone casters are.”

A pupil who attends Perth Academy commented: “As a pupil that was there. This is complete. Trash (sic).

“Both our head boy and head girl of this year are two of the best people I know and anything said in there (sic) speech was a joke and run by the people it was about before it was said.

“They made bad jokes about themselves for God’s sakes.

“To say that they don’t deserve there (sic) award for services to the school is a ‘disgrace’.”
