Pupils at Kilmarnock primary school self-isolating after track and trace hits two classes

Pupils at one of Kilmarnock's biggest primary schools are self isolating after track and trace was implemented at two classes.

It's understood that at least one person in a class has tested positive for Covid.

A number of pupils identified as close contacts of the individual have been asked to self-isolate as a result of the positive tests.

It comes less than a month after the school had its first case of coronavirus on October 10.

Today, NHS Ayrshire & Arran confirmed that contact tracing was being carried out at the school.

Lynne McNiven, joint director of public health, said: "NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Test & Protect team is conducting contact tracing within Whatriggs Primary in the East Ayrshire council area.

"A small number of individuals are being contacted by the Test and Protect team and told to self-isolate at home for 14 days.

"We appreciate this is a very worrying time.

"However, we would like to assure people that every measure is being taken to protect pupils and staff.

"To respect and maintain patient confidentiality it is not possible to release any further information at this time.

"We would like to remind people of the symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19): new persistent cough; high temperature; and / or loss of taste and smell.

Anyone who develops any of these symptoms should book a test and self-isolate immediately.

"Everyone in Ayrshire and Arran is reminded to remember the FACTS guidance:

"F – Face coverings. These should be used in shops and on public transport (buses,

trains and taxis)

"A – Avoid crowded places.

"C – Clean your hands frequently, using water & soap whenever possible.

"T – Two metres – observe physical distancing.

"S – Self-isolate and book a test if you are suffering from COVID-19 symptoms."
