Pupils and staff isolating after coronavirus cases involving two schools in Neath

Two primary schools in Neath have confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Neath Port Talbot council has confirmed new cases of the virus at two primary schools in the county borough - with one case involving a year six pupil and another concerning a staff member.

One pupil at Cwmnedd Primary School, Glynneath, has tested positive. Seven other pupils and three members of staff have been told to self-isolate for 14 days.

Parents of the children concerned have been contacted and advised of the appropriate process to follow.

The second confirmed case is a member of staff at Coedffranc Primary School, which is around 12 miles away from Cwmnedd. The staff member attended the school last Thursday, September 3, when no pupils were present at the time. Three other members of staff at that school are currently isolating.

A council spokesman said: “The council’s Test Trace Protect service is currently working to support two schools in the county borough following positive coronavirus test results.

"It is important to note that control and safety measures are in place and are being followed strictly in both schools to limit any further transmission. Staff at both schools acted promptly and in line with national guidance.

"Both schools remain open and it is not necessary for any other child to self-isolate, stay away from school or to be tested, unless they develop symptoms of Covid-19.”

The news comes as other schools in south Wales have also taken similar measures.

A total of 30 children at Ysgol Bro Edern in Cardiff have to isolate for two weeks after a coronavirus case was confirmed at the school.

And Rhondda MP Chris Bryant, said two schools in his constituency were taking precautions following concerns over coronavirus cases.

According to the latest Public Health Wales figures, there were no coronavirus deaths recorded in Wales in the past 24 hours but cases of the virus have risen significantly.

The latest figures from Public Health Wales (PHW) on Monday (September 7) reveal 133 new lab-confirmed cases of the virus in Wales.

That is the highest number since June 27 when 140 cases were recorded.
