Pupil at Scots high school in Midlothian tests positive for coronavirus

A pupil at a secondary school in Midlothian is the latest in a wave of school kids to test positive for Covid-19.

Staff at Lasswade High School in Bonnyrigg confirmed the news on August 25.

In a statement from the secondary, staff confirmed that the pupil was not attending the school while infectious.

A small number of students and staff who were in close contact with the pupil have been contacted by the Scottish Government's Test and Protect team.

Students are being told to attend school as normal.

The statement posted on Lasswade's official website read: "A student of the school has tested positive for COVID-19.

"However they were not attending school while infectious. The Test and Protect team has been in touch with a small number of close contacts of the case and students should attend school as normal.

"If your child/young person should develop COVID symptoms; fever, new continuous cough, and, or a loss or change in sense of smell or taste, please call 0800 028 2816."

It comes as the Education Secretary John Swinney announced guidance for secondary school kids over the age of 12 to wear a face covering in a corridor, communal area or school bus from Monday, August 31.

Over the last week a number of pupils and teachers have at schools across the country have been forced to self-isolate for two weeks after testing positive for the deadly virus.

Dr Janet Stevenson, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, NHS Lothian, said: “We are aware that a pupil who attends Password High School in Midlothian has tested positive for COVID-19 and have been in contact with the school.

“The Health Protection team have been in contact with the pupil, their family and any other close contacts.

“Appropriate advice and guidance to self isolate if required, has been provided.

“The school remains open.”
