Punters told to leave 'immediately' as 14 pubs close early after violent weekend scenes

Pub punters were reportedly told to finish their drinks and leave 'immediately' after violent scenes in Hull prompted at least 14 boozers to close early.

The pubs shut down to protect their staff and customers after some establishments were said to have been 'trashed' in a night of violence on Saturday, HullLive reports.

On Sunday evening, customers at one boozer were locked in "for their own safety" following reports of a large group of men in the area looking for open pubs.

Although some claimed police issued advice to close the pubs, other landlords reportedly said officers were not involved and the decision was taken by boozers.

One woman said her dad was happily enjoying his pint at Darley’s in Hessle, in Hull, on Sunday afternoon when he and the other customers were asked to drink and eat up ‘immediately’.

Punters said they were locked in "for their own safety" at the Hope Pole (Google)

She said: "My father who lives in Hessle says he is ‘fuming as went to his local pub and as he was sipping through his pint the landlord announced that customers had to finish their food and drinks and then leave immediately as they was closing( because of the violence).

"He said he needed to keep everyone safe in case it happens again.

"I think it’s terrible that the pubs have been on and off opening and closing for 18 months and now because of all this they are closed again. It does make sense to keep everyone safe but it’s disappointing."

At the Hope Pole on Hull's Kingston Road punters said they were locked in "for their own safety" on Sunday evening after reports of a large group of men in the area looking for open pubs.

The Norland in First Lane, Hessle was among those to announce they were closing early.

On Facebook it said: "We have taken the decision to stay closed today. We will be back tomorrow (Monday).

"We are really sorry to have to take this drastic action but the safety of our guests and team is paramount."

Several other pubs in the town, as well as Boothferry Road, Anlaby Road and Hessle Road in Hull, also took similar action.

The landlord of a Hessle Road pub says he has heard reports of major issues on Saturday night.

He said: "We took the decision to close at around 6pm on Sunday although we did not hear anything from the police.

"We initially locked customers in for their safety... But we decided it would be safer just to close up.

"We have heard the pubs on Boothferry Road were trashed.

"But we have heard nothing from the police on this.

"It is frustrating as we have all lost out financially today, just as we are trying to get back on our feet after lockdown."

There were reports of fighting, people helping themselves to drink without paying and criminal damage.

The Three Tuns and The Fiveways, both in Boothferry Road, are thought to be two of the pubs at the centre of the trouble although Hull Live has been unable to contact the pubs.

One pub worker, who didn't specify which pub he worked at, said: "We are one of the pubs that closed. Our colleagues down the road had a rough time last night, so safety first."

These are some of the pubs that Hull Live understands have closed:
