Punters left fuming as pub raises price of pint of lager to £6

A North Staffordshire pub which reopened in September is charging punters almost £6 for a pint.

The Spotgate on Hilderstone Road, close to Meir Heath, is requesting that boozers pay £5.95 for a pint of Birra Moretti.

The pub is well known for its old fashioned train carriages, which function as seating for the restaurant.

But it's been criticised by drinkers who have likened it to London prices, reports Stoke On Trent Live.

Taking to social media, Sean Lock posted: “If I still need to take out a mortgage to buy a pint, I shan’t be visiting any time soon”

Jill Rushton wrote: “It’s very pricey, I paid £3 for a half pint of lager in there last week!”

61-year-old Mervyn Edwards is a local historian who knows his way around a pint in Staffordshire.

He says he has not seen a pint of Moretti at £5.95 anywhere in the region.

Mervyn said: “Some lagers in pubs are very expensive, they're harder to source and all of that is reflected in the price.

“If it’s a standard lager, one of the usual suspects, it’s the kind of price that isn’t going to serve the pub well. I can’t see North Staffordshire people paying that much for a mere pint of lager.

“Pubs have got a decision to make at the moment.

"They have overheads, there’s gas and electricity and everything else.

"Pubs across the board are beginning to put prices up to £3.60/3.70 for a pint of beer.

"It is the standard in many pubs which I think is a big ask for Potteries people, as wages aren’t particularly going up.

“The only thing I would say is if public houses don't want punters to go to supermarkets, and clearly they don’t, then they’ve got to play ball. We all have to work together so public houses prosper and also that the public don’t feel ripped off.

“You shouldn’t have to ask the prices, there’s a legal requirement to put a chalk board up or a visible price list. I feel there’s a duty of care for licensees to ensure there’s a visible price list.”

New manager at the Spotgate Inn, Jo Cooper, said: "I'd like to state that we listen to our customers and we will conduct another price review this week."

In April, it was reported that beer prices were rocketing to £7 a pint.

The Campaign for Pubs pressure group boss Greg Mulholland said the “extraordinary” prices could put off beer fans from going to the pub.

And the Campaign for Real Ale fears the national average will soon be £5.
