Punters bet on Leo Varadkar to be gone by summer as police probe ongoing

Punters are starting to believe Leo Varadkar could be gone by the summer as they are backing him into 6/1 from 20/1 to be replaced as Fine Gael leader by June.

And those betting at Boylesports are putting their money on a Fine Gael leadership election.

It was confirmed at the weekend that an initial inquiry into the leak of a confidential health document by Varadkar to a friend has been upgraded to a full criminal investigation.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald branded the affair as an "abuse of power," and even called on the Tanaiste to resign.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesman for BoyleSports said: “We’ve noticed quite an increase in speculation on Leo Varadkar’s future this week and a growing number believe he could be on borrowed time.

“That has forced us down to 6/1 from 20/1 that he’ll relinquish Fine Gael leadership by as early as June with Simon Coveney sitting as odds-on favourite to take the reins.”

Varadkar is also down to just 2/1 from 10/1 not to resume Taoiseach duties by the start of next year as scheduled.

Simon Coveney (4/7) and Simon Harris (5/1) are the two leading contenders if a party leadership election is to happen.

Here are the listed odds:

Leo Varadkar Specials

6/1 Not to be Leader of Fine Gael on June 1st 2021

2/1 Not to be Taoiseach on January 1st 2022

Next Fine Gael Leader

4/7 Simon Coveney

5/1 Simon Harris

6/1 Paschal Donohoe

10/1 Helen McEntee

20/1 Josepha Madigan

25/1 Neale Richmond

25/1 Jennifer Carroll MacNeill
