Punters back plans to expand beer gardens at Wetherspoon pubs

Pub goers have backed pub chain Wetherspoon's plans to extend the beer gardens of two of its venues in Nottinghamshire.

The company wants to make improvements to The Gooseberry Bush, in Peel Street, in the city centre, and also to The Last Post, Chilwell Road, in Beeston.

A spokesman said it planned to invest "hundreds of thousands of pounds" in the proposed developments which would  allow it to offer its customers "the best facilities possible".

Customers told Nottinghamshire Live they were in favour of the changes.

James Cholerton, 23, a Nottingham Trent University (NTU) quantity surveying student, said: "As a final year NTU student, I've been a frequent drinker at The Gooseberry Bush.

"I'm all for the idea of extending the beer garden as its growing popularity with both students and locals makes it very busy at peak times.

"Having the extra space for summer will make it the place to be for seasoned drinkers like myself."

Ally Rivera, 23, who studies culture, film and media studies at the University of Nottingham, pledged her support.

She said: "Wetherspoon is inexpensive and a great place to go if you’re on a budget but still want to go out.

"I’m always partial to bars with outdoor seating/gardens because it’s a good location for day drinking.

"And at night if the bar is too packed it’s nice to be outdoors.”

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “Our aim is to extend the size of our beer gardens at both pubs.

“This would mean extending into the car parks of each pub.

“We strive to offer our customers the best facilities possible and believe they welcome a bigger beer garden with more opportunities for customers to eat and drink outside.

“We would be looking to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds across the two projects.

“At this stage there are no on site dates as we await the outcome of the planning decisions.”

A previous planning application submitted by the pub chain to the city council to expand the beer garden of The Gooseberry Bush was rejected in September last year due to noise fears.
