Punters back 2020 to be the hottest year for Ireland as Europe to sizzle in 40C heatwave

As Spain will hit 40C towards the end of the week, punters are backing the odds that Ireland will break the record for the hottest day ever at 33.3C.

The odds for 2020 to be the hottest year ever have gone from 4/1 to 2/1.

This month is hotly tipped to be a scorcher as the odds for the Irish record in July of 32.3°C to be broken has melted into 4/1 from 8/1.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “The temperatures might not be expected to fly up, but the odds have been going in the other direction and we’re only 4/1 from 8/1 about July’s record being smashed.

“This year we have seen some hot conditions already and for 2020 to have the hottest day ever is now a 2/1 chance having been 4/1.

“It comes after May was reported as one of the driest on record, so punters are hoping for an even hotter July.”

Met Eireann has said that Dublin is in for a week of hell with cloudy, unsettled and heavy rain to batter the capital for the rest of the week.

There is good news though as drier, brighter weather is being forecast for the early days of next week.

It is forecast to pick up slightly as we head into the weekend but daytime temperatures are still slightly below average for this time of year.
