Punk scene in 1980s Belfast captured in archive footage from BBC

BBC Northern Ireland has shared archive footage which depicts the punk scene in Belfast in the late 70s and early 80s.

The footage shows how punk music and culture helped unite people from various backgrounds during the Troubles.

The five minute clip was first broadcast in January 1980 on Something Else, a BBC2 show which looked at youth culture across the UK.

It shows different perspectives of Belfast from people living elsewhere, before taking a look at how life was lived in the city in the late 70s and early 80s.

The footage then features interviews with young people from various backgrounds, all of whom share a common interest in the city's music scene.

The clip shows how punk music gave many in the city an outlet to dance and socialise with other like-minded people.
