Punjab: Tarn Taran SSP replaced following MLA’s accusations

TARN TARAN: A day after allegations against Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurmeet Singh Chohan on social media by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Khadur Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura, the former was unexpectedly transferred from the district.

"SSP I had thought you were only hand in glove with thieves, But now it is revealed that that you are a coward too", reads the post uploaded by Manjinder on his Facebook page. He also levelled some serious allegations including misbehaviour with his relatives, corruption etc.

When contacted Lalpura, the person who picked up the phone said the MLA was busy in a meeting in Chandigarh.

According to sources, this happened after Tarn Taran police conducted raids on the people indulged in illegal mining activities in the villages near the Beas river and had arrested around one dozen persons.

On Thursday Tarn Taran SSP Gurmeet Singh Chohan was replaced with Ashwani Kapoor who joined as the new SSP of Tarn Taran.

When asked to give his reaction, Chohan concluded his one line response in poetic verse: "girate hain shahasavaar hee maidaan-i-jang mein" (It is the warrior who falls in the battlefield).

On Friday, Chauhan received a heartfelt farewell from his fellow officer and colleagues. Police officers of various ranks from the entire district gathered to bid him farewell. As Chauhan rode in an open jeep, he appeared emotional while his colleagues showered him with flower petals.

In response to Chohan's transfer, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia tweeted that Chohan had been transferred solely because he had taken a strong stance against illegal mining.
