Punjab: Rust in base of main tower caused collapse

MOHALI: The preliminary probe has found that the rusted lower portion of the main power tower was the main cause for collapse. The high-tension wires fixed with other two towers could not withstand the pull pressure and gave way. The PSPCL inspection team failed to notice the rusted base of the main tower that collapsed first.

PSPCL CMD BS Sran ordered the probe by a two-member committee of chief engineers and they have been asked to submit the report within 10 days. The towers were installed 23 years ago and thereafter no inspection was done to find faults.

However, after four days of efforts, the PSPCL managed to erect all the three towers and fix the high-tension wires, enabling the restoration of power. Mohali division superintending engineer (SE) Ashwani Kumar said, "We have re-erected all the three towers despite the rains and restored the power supply through permanent lines. These were the main power lines feeding the three substations of Zirakpur."

The residents said now they were getting uninterrupted power supply. A day before, the residents did complain of low voltage, but it was rectified later.

Sanjeev Bansal, a Zirakpur resident, said, "Situation is much better as compared to Friday night. Maybe due to low power demand with a fall in temperature."
