Punjab: Panchayat secretary caught with 3.5kgs opium in Nabha

PATIALA: The police in Punjab's Nabha have arrested two persons including a panchayat secretary and recovered around 3.5 kgs of opium from his possession.

The accused Panchayat secretary is said to have smuggled around 60 kg of opium in the past two years, according to the police.

The case against accused Panchayat secretary identified as Deepak Garg of Bhawanigarh, Sangrur and his accomplice Navpreet pal of Patiala has been registered at Sadar Nabha police station under sections of NDPS Act.

The police said that Navpreet was a tipper driver whereas Deepak was panchayat secretary for five villages in Nabha and was involved in smuggling of opium.

The police claimed that in the past two years approximately, the accused Deepak used to bring it from Rajasthan. Both the accused were nabbed near Rohta village of Nabha during a police operation against drug smuggling.

"We have nominated an accused from Rajasthan and are investigating the matter thoroughly to get details of the supply chain. It is being probe where the accused had planned to supply this opium. IN the past, they had supplied the opium mainly in Ludhiana, Patiala, and other districts in Punjab and also in some part of Haryana. The further investigation is going on”, said DSP Nabha.
