MOHALI: In a bid to check gangsters, carjackers, robbers and snatchers, Mohali police have recovered 19 stolen cars and 25 weapons with the arrest of 30 criminals.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Sheel Soni said that he was determined to make Mohali a crime-free district.
Besides the 19 cars, police have also recovered 12 stolen motorcycles, 51 mobile phones, 20 pistols, 132 live cartridges, one AK47 rifle, 4 to 9mm pistol magazines as well as gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh, 4.5 kg silver and Rs 1.16 crore cash.
SSP Soni said, “Orders have been issued to all DSPs and SHOs to tighten the noose around gangsters, snatchers and carjackers by identifying all top criminals and the hotspots infamous for such activity in their jurisdictions and launching a combing operation to nab all those involved in robberies, snatchings and carjackings.”
He said that such recoveries and arrests were the result of search operations conducted in the past few months in vulnerable housing societies of the district. According to the SSP, chief minister Bhagwant Mann has given Punjab Police a free hand and full liberty to check gangsters.
He said drives were being conducted to combat gangsters and break into their hideouts in the district.
During the operation to search for criminal elements in various housing societies in Mohali, police recovered weapons, ammunition, drugs and cash from five housing societies in Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur.
Cricket bookies, criminals with arms, ammunitions, drugs and cash were arrested in such housing societies.
Police arrested eight gangsters, booked 32 owners, impounded 10 vehicles including BMW and seized illegal liquor during search of Acme affordable flats, Homeland Heights housing society, Eden Court, Jal Vayu Vihar, Maya Gardens, SBP City Dreams and Penta homes housing societies in Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur.
