Punjab: Kabbadi player assaulted with sharp edged weapon after tournament in Patiala

PATIALA: A Kabaddi player was assaulted allegedly with a knife by some unidentified accused in Nain Kalan village of Patiala district on Saturday late in the evening.

The victim player has been identified as Sukhwinder Singh and was hospitalized in government Rajindra hospital in Patiala.

The police have registered a case under sections of IPC including murderous attempt against some unidentified accused at Sadar Patiala police station and initiated the probe in the matter. The police said that victim player was attacked by the assailants on his chest by a sharp-edged weapon but now he was out of danger.

The Punjab health minister had also visited on invitation at this one day tournament at Nain Kalan village however the minister had left the venue more than an hour before the incident. The police said that the Kabaddi player was attacked at around 9.30PM on Saturday after he came out of the ground where the tournament was almost finished.

"Sukhwinder Singh is a Kabaddi player though he was not a renowned player, but he used to play the village level tournaments. We have registered the case and initiated the probe in the matter and the accused will be nabbed soon", said station house officer inspector Harshveer Singh Sandhu.

Nain Kalan village Sarpanch Gurpreet Singh said, "We organised one day tournament of Kabaddi and it was 23rd tournament where we have invited MLAs Chetan Singh Jauremajra, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Gurlal Singh Ghanaur to grace our event. A few teams from Punjab and Haryana reached to participate in the tournament in which a team from Rampura was declared winner. The Kabaddi player Sukhwinder Singh, 26, hails from Ghagga but was playing from Dutal team in 65 kg weight category. He was attacked outside the ground while towards his car. The police are investigating the case".
