CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday directed the HC registrar (judicial) to produce the status reports in Punjab’s drug haul case for examination. The court would look at the reports in its chamber before passing any order on November 18.
During the hearing of the case before the division bench comprising Justice Augustine George Masih and Justice A K Verma, advocate general Punjab, A P S Deol moved an application for examining status reports regarding the nexus of police officers and drug traffickers in Punjab. The AG also sought directions to pass an order to enable the investigating agency to proceed further in these cases. After hearing the case for around an hour, the bench made it clear that it would first examine the reports in the chamber.
HC had taken suo motu cognizance of drug issue
The matter is related to drug menace in Punjab and had reached before the HC through a petition filed by Mohali resident Tarlochan Singh. When Tarlochan Singh was confined in Ropar jail in relation to some offence, he had filed a petition before the high court in 2013 highlighting the sale of intoxicants in the Ropar jail in connivance with the jail officials. Former DGP (jail) Punjab, Shashikant had also written a letter to high court alleging nexus of politicians with drug lords in Punjab. Considering it a serious issue in large public interest, the high court had taken suo motu cognizance of the issue and sought explanation from the Punjab government.
