Punjab: Court sentences man to 20 years RI for sexual assault on minor

LUDHIANA: A local court has sentenced a person to twenty years rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault on a minor girl.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Special Court) Ravi Inder Kaur Sandhu also imposed a fine of Rs.1,30,000 on the convict and in default of payment of fine, he will have to further undergo rigorous imprisonment for nine months.

The court ordered that keeping in view the gravity of offence and severity of mental and physical harm suffered by the victim/prosecutrix, she is awarded compensation of Rs.4 Lakhs on account of being raped and Rs.3 Lakhs for carrying pregnancy on account of rape, which is to be paid by the state government under the Punjab Scheme.

It further ordered that prosecutrix is further entitled for Rs.65,000 I.e 50% out of total fine amount of Rs.1.3 Lakhs imposed upon the accused, if paid by him.

On 12 December 2020, Sahnewal police had booked the accused under sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC and section of Protection of Children from Sexual offence Act for sexual assault with about fourteen years old girl living in the neighbourhood.

Additional Public Prosecutor for the state in the case, S S Haidar said that the case was registered on the statement of mother of the victim.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
