MOHALI: Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) court in Mohali has convicted two Punjab Police officers in 1992 fake encounter case. The verdict came after 30 years of trial on Friday.
Two accused have been convicted whereas main accused, then SHO passed away during the course of trial, said Sarabjit Singh Verma, the counsel for victims.
The quantum in this case will be pronounced on August 16 against then additional SHO inspector Kishan Singh and sub inspector Tarsem Lal posted at police station Mehta near Amritsar.
However, the main accused SHO police station Mehta inspector Rajinder Singh had passed away during the trail of the case.
Accused have been convicted under section 302 read with 34, 201 and 218 of the IPC. They were on bail and now taken into police custody.
In this case on September 13, 1992, police claimed Sahib Singh, Dalbir Singh and Balwinder Singh who were in their custody killed in cross firing while taking recovery of arms and ammunition and also claimed to have killed unidentified militant who attacked the police party get the arrested persons released.
CBI registered the case on February 28,1997 and chargesheeted inspector Rajinder Singh, the then SHO PS Mehta, inspector Kishan Singh the then additional SHO Mehta and SI Tarsem Lal for the offence punishable under 302/201/218 of the IPC read with 34 IPC was presented on February 1, 1999 and all the evidence was recorded till October 20, 2005. But thereafter, the case remained stayed by the higher courts.
The case was reverted back to CBI court Mohali resulting in the pronouncement of the conviction by the court.
