MALERKOTLA: Two unidentified miscreants shot dead an AAP councillor at a gym in Malerkotla on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Muhammad Akbar Bholi of Sirhindi Gate who had won his maiden municipal council election on Congress ticket from Ward number 18 in February 2021 and had switched over to AAP ahead of Punjab Assembly elections.
Police officials said that Muhammad Akbar was jogging inside his gym located near Ludhiana Bypass at around 8am on Sunday morning, when one of the two unidentified miscreants wearing a black T Shirt entered. They added that in few seconds, as the deceased moved near to the masked miscreant, he took out pistol and shot at him.
Cops said that the deceased died on the spot after the bullet him in the heart area. They added that after the incident, the miscreant ran away from the spot with other accused on a motorcycle.
Police officials said that CCTV captured the images of the accused who seem to be between 20 to 25 years of age. They added that the accused had parked the motorcycle at some distance from the gym.
In the meanwhile, after police got information about the incident, police reached the spot and started probe into the matter.
Police later registered a case on the statement of wife of the deceased against the unidentified accused under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC and sections of Arms act.
