FATEHGARH SAHIB: One labourer died and at least 11 other labourers were injured in a blast that occurred in a boiler of a steel setup in Asia's iron and steel town Mandi Gobindgarh of Fatehgarh Sahib district in Punjab.
The blast, according to the police, took place on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday following which the melted metal had fallen over the labourers working in the premises of the boiler room.
"One of the injured labourers succumbed to injuries. The injured are undergoing treatment at DMC Ludhiana," said Prem Singh, station house officer, Mandi Gobindgarh police station.
Amloh deputy superintendent of police Sukhwinder Singh said, "A blast occurred in the boiler of the steel industry in the wee hours on Friday when the labourers were working."
The police said that the injured labourers were immediately rushed to the hospital in Ludhiana district. However, some of the injured had suffered serious injuries.
The police have registered a case against four persons including Sandeep Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Sahil Bansal and Vijayant Bansal of Mandi Gobindgarh under sections 304 (A), 287, 336, 337 and 338 of Indian Penal Code.
All the accused are partners and were running their steel industry for past many years.
The police said the main reason behind the blast was heating up of the boiler and there was no evidence that could prove the theory of unusual scrap material use, leading to the explosion.
The police have identified the deceased as Arun Majhi while the injured are identified as Vicky Kumar Mandal, Laljee Tiwari, Rakesh, Vinod, Shailesh Rai, BIttu, Amarjeet, Aman Kumar, Dharminder Patel, Ashok Singh and Sada Brij Kumar.
