Pune: Two leopard cubs, golden jackal rescued in Ambegaon & Junnar

PUNE: The forest department on Monday rescued two leopard cubs from a well at Tavrewadi village in Ambegaon tehsil.

Later, the cubs were reunited with their mother.

The officials got to know about the cubs from local farmers. The rescue operation stretched for a couple of hours, said a forest official.

Smita Rajhans, forest officer, Manchar forest range, who headed the rescue operation, told TOI, “A farmer, Amar Tawre, had gone to the well on Monday morning. He heard the noise of the cubs and informed us. We, along with villagers, took them out of the well. Upon inspecting the areas near the well, we came to know that the cubs were with their mother. Their mother came to the well in search of the cubs around 9 pm and took them away.”

In another incident, a young golden jackal, found to be suffering from paralysis, was rescued by Wildlife SOS, an NGO, and forest officials from near Tejur village in Junnar tehsil on Sunday.

The jackal was rushed to the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre and is currently under intensive care. Wildlife SOS veterinary officer Nikhil Bangar said that the jackal had suffered hindquarter paralysis and was unable to bear its body weight. The animal, estimated to be eight months old, was taken to Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre in Junnar.
