PUNE: The kin of the deceased workers from the Yerawada site will get Rs 5 lakh each from the Maharashtra Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, labour department minister Hasan Mushrif said on Friday.
He said that the workers at the construction site were not registered with the board, but the state would disburse the amount as done in some previous cases. “The contractor will have to take care of the health requirements of the injured workers,” he added. He will have to send the deceased to the respective home towns.
Mushrif said a detailed inquiry has been ordered into the collapse. A detailed report is expected from the local authorities and the police.
He added that an order will soon be issued holding builders and contractors responsible for registering the workers before any construction work commences.
“Though the process is fairly simple, many workers at most construction sites are not registered with the board. It is the nodal organisation that maintains the registration and funds collected through cess on new building projects. It gives various relief to the workers once they are registered,” he told TOI.
Currently, there are 12 lakh registered workers with the board. It has a cess deposit amount of Rs 1,200 crore. Workers who register with the board can get benefits for medical, accidental and educational purpose, Mushrif said.
