PUNE: A Swargate police team on Wednesday night raided a room in a housing society in the Gultekdi area and unearthed a racket involved in accepting bets on the ongoing India-West Indies T-20 International Cricket series.
Senior inspector Ashok Indalkar and his team arrested six persons and seized cash, laptop and other equipment, collectively worth Rs7.21 lakh.
The police said they also seized a cellphone Sim card registered in the name of some unknown person from the spot.
“The suspects were using that SIM card to accept bets on the match,” said assistant inspector Amol Rasal of the Swargate police.
Rasal said the police got a tip-off about the betting racket being run on the premises of a housing society in the Gultekdi area.
“Our team raided the spot and arrested six men, who were found accepting bets,” Rasal said.
He also said that the suspects have been arrested under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act and the Indian Telegraph Act.
