Pune: New courses in liberal arts, digital society a big draw

PUNE: New-age courses have been introduced by many institutes and colleges at the undergraduate level and their enrolment has been overwhelming. Students taking up these three-year courses can find jobs after they get their degree which has fuelled their demand, heads of several institutes said.

Many colleges have also launched diploma programmes for students who have passed Std X. Victorious Kidss Educares has introduced new subjects looking at the world scenario and changing landscape of jobs and professional requirements.

Subjects such as digital society, world religion, political sciences, geography, German, film, literature, and performance are being introduced from this academic year.

President of VKE Robbin Ghosh said, “These courses will give students a wider choice to choose what they want and become successful.”

There is a long tradition of kirtan as a means of entertainment and enlightenment where two styles__ warkari and naradiya __ are considered important and many students practice these styles.

Bharati Vidyapeeth’s School of Performing Arts has introduced a diploma course in the scientific education of kirtan from July 2022.

The university started this four-year course six years ago and till date, a total of three batches with more than 50 students have completed it.

Course coordinator Sharangdhar Sathe said, “ Students can study both warkari and naradiya kirtan at the same time. Abhang, kirtan, akhyan, mahatmya, Sanskrit, and Marathi studies, songs, stories and elements of music are also included. ”

Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha introduced two new media courses BVoc in media and and entertainment and a certificate course in media skills under Shri Siddhivinayak Mahila Mahavidyalaya.

The first is a three-year graduation programme while the certificate course in media skills is a one-year course. The cost-effective courses, which will be taught at the School of Media Activity Research & Technology, have been designed to train students in media technologies and specific media skills and are made available, especially for girls.

Radhika Ingle, director of SMART, said, “At present, girls are more involved in soft skills like proofreading or content writing but the participation of girls in technology-based areas like video technology, sound engineering or production should be increased. These courses have been designed for skill-based education. We have also set up state-of-the-art audio and a video studio.”
