Pune Metropolitan Region adds 10k Covid cases for 2nd straight day; 5 more dead

PUNE: The Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) on Saturday added 10,281 cases of Covid-19, its single-day highest tally in May 2, 2021, when 11,661 individuals had tested positive.

Despite the sharp rise in cases, people in hospital care has remained low (2,142) as most patients are showing mild symptoms.

This is for the second consecutive day that the region has added more than 10,000 cases. The areas under Pune municipal limits reported 5,705 cases on Saturday, while the PCMC and rural areas added 2,545 and 2,031 cases, respectively. With this, the total number of cases have risen above 12.39 lakh.

A report released by district health officer Bhagwan Pawar stated that 4,196 patients were declared cured in the region on Saturday. These included 2,338 patients from the PMC limits, 1,073 from the PCMC areas and 785 from the rural and cantonment parts. So far, more than 11.64 lakh people have recovered from the infection in PMR.

The region's tally of active patients increased to 55,997 on Saturday evening. Of these, as many as 53,855 patients (96.1%) were in home isolation.

The daily testing increased to 39,536 in the region on Saturday. The day's positivity rate was recorded at 26% for PMR. As many as 19,174 samples were tested in the PMC limits and 12,689 in the Pimpri Chinchwad area on Saturday.

Health officials said daily sample testing has recorded a steady rise in the region in the last one week. The testing in the urban pockets of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad has gone up significantly, they said.

Five more patients succumbed to the infection in the region on Saturday, taking its progressive tally of deaths to 19,284. Two death were reported in PMC limits on Saturday, while one fatality each was recorded in the cantonment, rural and Pimpri Chinchwad areas.

Amid the rising caseload, the health officials have urged the citizens to abide by the Covid-appropriate behaviour to keep the infection at bay.
