PUNE: Steady showers gave Pune 17.6mm of rain till 11.30pm on Monday night — as recorded at Shivajinagar — with the IMD forecasting similar spells on Tuesday.
A forecast of heavy to very heavy rain has been sounded for the ghats in Pune district for Tuesday and Wednesday. Pune city is likely to see moderate rains over the next two days, followed by light to moderate spells on Thursday.
Till about 8:30pm on Monday, Shivajinagar had received 3.5mm rain and Lohegaon 9.2mm. But from 8:30pm till 11:30pm, Shivajinagar received another 14mm.
Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting division, told TOI, "We had issued forecasts of overnight rains in the city and rainfall activity very likely to continue in and around Pune on Tuesday as well. Pune had a moderate rain forecast till Tuesday morning, with warning of isolated heavy rain in the adjacent ghat areas. From time to time, there could be intense downpour causing reduction in visibility while driving.”
Kashyapi said the monsoon is likely to be vigorous till up to 72 hours in Maharashtra. Pune had overcast skies on Monday night with high humidity (97%).
Weather systems resulting in the monsoon revival over the state include a wellmarked low pressure area over west-central, adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh, south Odisha coasts as well as an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to middle tropospheric levels. Other systems include the monsoon trough and a shear zone running roughly along latitude 18°N in lower and middle tropospheric levels.
IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Marathawada, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Gujarat from September 6 to 10.
