PUNE: An online scamster has duped a 45-year-old woman from New Sangvi of Rs1.88 lakh under the pretext of transferring cashback into her account, which he claimed she had received while using a digital payment app.
By using the woman’s details, the man also obtained a credit card from a private bank. He made purchases with it and got the woman a bill for interest of Rs4,900 on these transactions.
The fraud took place between October and November last year. The woman had filed a complaint application with the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber crime cell. After the probe, the case was registered with the Sangvi police on Thursday.
An officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad police said that the woman runs a grocery store in Sangvi. On October 18, 2021, she received a call from an unknown man. He told her she had not transferred cashback she received through transactions on a digital payment app into her account.
“The complainant was using different payment apps in her store, so she thought she may have forgotten to transfer the sum to herself. She shared her bank details, PAN card and Aadhaar number,” the officer said.
“He siphoned off Rs1.88 lakh from her bank account through seven transactions between November 2 and November 4 last year,” he said.
The fraud came to light when the woman checked her account after few days and found that only Rs49 were left. “Later, she also received a credit card statement in her name and found that she had to pay interest on several purchases,” he told TOI.
The case has been registered under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Information Technology (IT) Act.
