PUNE: Residents, traders and business establishments in the Khadki Cantonment areas can now expect improved cell phone connectivity in the next few weeks.
The Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) has decided to hire the services of 15 cell phone towers-on-wheels after the Union defence ministry gave its nod to such an initiative.
They will strengthen the prevailing connectivity being provided by 13 static cell phone towers located across military areas of Khadki.
“A board of officers constituted as per the ministry’s nod will finalise locations for the 15 cell phone towers-on-wheels, following which we will float tenders for the same,” a senior official of KCB told TOI on condition of anonymity, adding, “The process is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.Officers from the Indian Army Corps of Signals arm will select locations for the towers that can cover civil as well as military areas. The board will also generate revenue from the initiative.”
A senior army officer from Station HQ, Khadki, said, “We are yet to finalise tower locations. We are assessing technical and security aspects first.”
