PUNE: A five-year-old boy was rescued by the Bibvewadi police within four hours of his kidnapping, which took place around 7.40pm on Wednesday.
The crime was perpetrated by a tempo driver residing near the child's house at Upper Indiranagar.
After police nabbed Swapnil Ramesh Shinde (27) on the charge of kidnapping, he revealed to them that he had wanted to teach a lesson to the boy's mother. The police are verfiying the role of Shinde's friend in the crime.
A case has been registered for offences under sections 364 (kidnapping/abducting to murder), 504 (intentional insult), 507 (threatening) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-Zone V) Namrata Patil said, "The complainant woman is a single mother, who works at a private mall. Her husband had deserted her about four years ago. Shinde, who works with a Bhavani Peth transporter, had an affair with the woman for the past seven months, but they broke up recently. Shinde had then threatened her that he would either harm her or her son. We rescued the boy from Shinde around 11.30 pm from an autorickshaw parked at Kakade Vasti near Kondhwa. Shinde was taken into custody."
The boy's mother told TOI, "I was at my workplace at the time of the incident. We are required to keep our cellphones switched off at work. My neighbours take care of my son when I am at work. I knew Shinde, who stays in the neighbourhood, for the past seven months. He had professed love for me. We broke up around 15 days ago and since then, he has been threatening me. On Wednesday evening, when I returned home from work, I did not see my son around. He was playing with other children from the locality when Shinde took him away. He had threatened me that he would harm me or my boy. Without thinking much, I rushed to the police station and lodged a complaint."TNN
