Pundits predict Watford vs Chelsea with Frank Lampard's side tipped to avoid potential banana skin

After bowing out of the Carabao Cup in midweek, Chelsea return Premier League action this weekend against bottom club Watford.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United, ending their run of seven straight wins.

However, it was a much-changed side that took to the field at Stamford Bridge, with vital minutes handed out to the likes of Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour.

A trip to bottom of the table Watford looks straight forward on paper, however, it hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Chelsea in recent seasons, with their 4-1 defeat in 2018 still hanging in the back supporters' minds.

The Hornets also almost won away at Tottenham a fortnight ago, which gives the Blues stern warning not to underestimate their opponents.

So, how do the national media pundits think they will fare? Here's a full round-up of their predictions.

Charlie Nicholas -  Sky Sports

"I have to hold my hands up and say 'wow' at Chelsea. A batch of youngsters are playing superbly and the balance is spot on, even without N'Golo Kante. If Tammy Abraham doesn't score, you have Christian Pulisic, then you have Callum Hudson-Odoi and Willian back in decent form too. They are really good to watch - the Roman Abramovich vision has been waiting to get to this sort of style.

"They have won the Premier League a number of times as well as the Champions League, but this is a whole new experience for them. I said it had the potential to be a roller coaster at Burnley, but they keep rolling teams over. How can you go against Chelsea at the moment, just because of the way they go about their business?

"By all accounts, Watford sounded like they were great for the first 20 and awful for the last 70 minutes against Bournemouth. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Gerard Deulofeu must get into these games. I keep getting the Chelsea games wrong, but if I go for them here, I may end up regretting it again, but my, they are good to watch."

CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-2

Mark Lawrenson -  BBC Sport

"Watford have drawn a lot recently and are not conceding many goals at the moment, but it is a big ask for them to go from stopping teams playing to beating them, especially against a good side such as Chelsea.

"I am sure the Hornets will get their first win of the season soon, but I very much doubt they will get it this weekend."

Lawro's prediction:  1-2

Michael Owen -  BetVictor

"Watford remain the only side without a league win so far this season and the Hornets have not won in their last nine home league games. It is hard to make a case for the hosts when inform Chelsea are the visitors to Vicarage Road on Saturday evening.

"At the time of writing – before the midweek League Cup tie with Manchester United – Frank Lampard’s side have won their last seven games in all competitions and have won their last four on the road in the league – scoring at least three times in the process.

"Chelsea shipped two late goals at Turf Moor last weekend which will have frustrated Lampard, but they are a side full of confidence and goals at present."

Tip:  Chelsea -1 handicap
