Pundits predict outcome of Arsenal's Premier League clash with Manchester United

After Tuesday's comfortable win over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, Arsenal return Premier League action on Monday night.

A much-changed XI set-up a more mouth-watering tie away at Liverpool in the last 16, after the Gunners hit Forest for five without reply.

While in the Premier League last weekend, the Gunners left it late to secure all three points against Aston Villa with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completing the turnaround with just six minutes remaining, after Unai Emery's side had twice trailed and been reduced to 10 men.

But Manchester United, Arsenal's opponents on Monday night, come into the game on the back of a poor rum of form. After suffering a disappointing defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium last Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side edged past Rochdale on penalties in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

And pundits are backing the Gunners to claim a positive result at Old Trafford.

The Gunners are turning into the comeback kings, although I am sure they would prefer not to be in a situation where they need a fightback in the first place.

Unlike United, Arsenal do not look short of goals, but it is at the back where Unai Emery's side still have problems.

After their loss at West Ham on Sunday, Manchester United have now lost seven of their last 15 games in the Premier League – as many as they had in their previous 40 games in the competition. Arsenal continue to frustrate and excite in equal measure, but they came from behind twice to beat Aston Villa on Sunday and they were a man light for the whole of the second period.

United kept a clean sheet against Leicester City in their last home league game, but I would be surprised if the Gunners did not find the back of David de Gea’s net in what promises to be a fascinating game between two clubs desperate to return to the automatic Champions League places this term.

Unai Emery will have been delighted by the return from long term injury of Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin in the midweek 5-0 League Cup success over Nottingham Forest. Add the impressive belated debut of summer signing Kieran Tierney and two goals from Brazilian teenage striker Gabriel Martinelli, and the suggestion is that the Gunners’ boss is going to have one or two difficult, but welcome, selection decisions to make in the weeks and months to come.

I am laughing already because we have a tale of two bad defences. Man United have one of the best keepers in the world in David de Gea and the most expensive defender in the world in £80m Harry Maguire. They got picked apart against West Ham and were nowhere near to earning anything from the match. Arsenal have five captains supposedly! Let the games begin!

Hector Bellerin played a little bit against Nottingham Forest. Ainsley Maitland-Niles is suspended and though Unai Emery has been cautious about him, I think Bellerin should play. Kieran Tierney should be in, but Rob Holding will miss out I think. Arsenal will play two protectors - to my amazement, Granit Xhaka will still be in, but I would go with Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi. I would be happy with Dani Ceballos and then Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It is that easy and simple for Arsenal.

On the flip side, who is fit for Manchester United? Marcus Rashford is out; is Anthony Martial ready? If Arsenal can play a more structured game on the counter-attack, I think they will come away with all three points. Man United will try to dominate the midfield with aggression, with Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba. Aubameyang and Pepe had chances against Liverpool at Anfield and if they get these chances against Man United I think they will take them. It will make life easier for Arsenal's defence with Man United's depleted frontline.
